We overestimate what we can do in a day, and we underestimate what we can do in a lifetime. By empowering younger generations, we go far beyond where we are right now.

Message Review

Main points and scriptures from this week's message.

The most influential and powerful families are families that have a big thinking, generational mindset. They see their children as their most valuable resource and greatest hope for the future!

Investing in future generations is the greatest investment that we can make.

Proverbs 13:22 (NIV)
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.

We should have a mindset that legacy starts with me! Right here, right now.

Genesis 12:2 (NIV)
"I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing."

What does God want to make you? A great father? A great giver? A great leader? Whatever it is, just like with Abraham, it is so that you can be a blessing to those around you and to come after you.

The first question to ask is, "How has God blessed you that you will be a blessing?"

  • If you are the first person in your family to know Christ...decide not to be the last.
  • If you came from a house of broken promises and failure...decide to pass on a legacy of honesty and success.
  • If you grow up small thinking...decide to be the first big thinker in your family,.
  • If your family was poor minded...you can be the beginning of a family that is rich and prosperous: mentally, spiritually, and financially.

You cannot do a lot about the past, but you can do something great and significant about the future.

Point 1: To think three is to live out vision that outlives you.

David was a great man after God's heart. He was a worshipper, a visionary, and a strong leader, but David was not perfect. Although he wanted to build a great house for God at a time in history when it was much needed, God wanted David to be the visionary but not the builder. To live our vision that outlives him.

1 Chronicles 22:5 (NIV)
David said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be build for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore, I will make preparations for it."

Notice he was amused not arrogant towards his young son. He was ambitious to partner with the younger generation.

Also notice that David thought BIG towards the house of God. He said, "Of great magnificence and fame and splendor..."

Point 2: To think three means to think big.

We should not have a "that's good enough" mentality, especially when it comes to the house of God. Let's have the best for our kids, our students. Let's think BIG! For our church specifically, we have a vision to put campuses in communities all around the region. South, North, East, West.

Point 3: To think three means to give big.

1 Chronicles 29:1–9 (ESV)
Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is still young and inexperienced and the work is great; for the temple is not for man, but for the Lord God. Now with all my ability, I have provided for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, and the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, onyx stones and inlaid stones, stones of antimony and stones of various colors, and all kinds of precious stones and alabaster in abundance. Moreover, in my delight in the house of my God, the treasure I have of gold and silver, I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holy temple, namely, 3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the buildings; of gold for the things of gold and of silver for the things of silver, that is, for all the work done by the craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?”

David's offering was somewhere in the range of 900 million in today's money. This was all from his personal wealth. Rather than thinking just about the amount he gave, think about the heart he gave with.
The scripture continues:
Then the rulers of the fathers’ households, and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with the overseers over the king’s work, offered willingly; and for the service for the house of God, they gave 5,000 talents and 10,000 darics of gold, and 10,000 talents of silver, and 18,000 talents of brass, and 100,000 talents of iron. Whoever possessed precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in care of Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly.

Next week is Legacy Offering, where we give our one-time best offering to invest into the future generations, our community, and the house of God. What is thinking big for you? What is thinking three going to look like for you and your offering?
Point 4: To think three is to pray big.

1 Chronicles 29:10–13 (ESV)
So David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly; and David said, “Blessed are You, O Lord God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.

Let's all decide that our prayers are going to be in synce with our faith and vision. Let's pray that provision is not the problem.

Message Discussion Questions

Read the following guidelines before starting your group discussion.

  • Answer the question specifically. Avoid tangents and try to stay on target.
  • Limit your responses to 1–2 minutes per question.
  • Use I, me, or we statements. This is designed to be for personal reflection, not a time to fix others with your opinion.
  • Each person is free to share without interruptions when sharing within the suggested guidelines.

The following questions will help guide your discussions and give your group some opportunities to open up and share.

  • When you think of great and powerful families, who do you think of? What do they do well?
  • Do you tend to overestimate what you can do in one day? OR Do you tend to underestimate what you can do in a lifetime? OR BOTH? Explain.
  • What would you like to be the first, and not the last of, in your family's legacy?
  • Fill in the blank. If you put yourself in Abraham's shoes, and God is speaking to you like he did to Abraham, God might say, "I want to make you into a great __________.
  • Have you ever been judged or told you could not do something based on your age? Have you ever been the one who judged or told someone they could not something because of their age?
  • Is your natural tendency to think "big" or think "that's good enough," when it comes to the house of God? Why?
  • Do you normally include the church in your prayers? Why or why not?

Live It Out

Encourage your group to start doing. Commit to a step, and live it out this week.

  • Participate in Legacy Offering this year. This is our one-time best offering we give each year which has done things like built our youth auditorium, new play areas for children, and other projects that invested into the next generation. Consider, pray, and plan your offering. To find out more info go to cc.church/legacy.
  • Pray for the next generation and pray for the future of the church.
  • Write out ways that your are aligning yourself with the vision of Champions Centre. Or if you are part of another church, how you are aligning yourself with their vision. For example, are my prayers in alignment? My giving? My serving? My words about my church? My lifestyle? Etc.
